How it Works

Create your campaign

Set up your Whirl fundraising campaign. Describe your dream with words, photos or illustrations.

Earn karma

Back other people’s campaigns and introduce new users to earn karma. The more karma you earn, the faster you make progress.

Raise funds

Once you reach the Active Zone, you can start raising funds for your campaign. The more karma you have, the bigger your goal can be.

What is Whirl?

Whirl is a completely new crowdfunding platform built on the principle of ‘Pay It Forward’. You can use Whirl to get funding for just about anything, as long as it’s legal. Your dream could be a startup company, a charitable project, a gift, a holiday or even a new car. All you back someone else’s campaign before you seek backing for your own. Whirl is ideal for people who don’t have the contacts, skills, or funds to campaign in other ways. By joining the Whirl community, you can back people with similar dreams, and get their backing in return.

What will you crowdfund?

Funding without the fuss

How it works

With Whirl, you help others to help yourself. One way to fund your dreams is to get into debt. With Whirl, you can raise funds that don’t have to be repaid. All you have to do is help others first — then the Whirl community will help you. Let’s say Alex is raising money to buy an amazing holiday for his terminally ill nephew. His campaign is featured prominently in the Whirl Active Zone. His goal is $20,000, and he’s raised $12,150 so far.

What is Karma?

Karma is at the heart of of Whirl. Your level of karma reflects how much backing you’ve offered to other users. You earn seven karma points for every dollar of financial support you offer. You can also earn bonus karma when users you’ve introduced to Whirl back campaigns. The more karma you have, the quicker you move towards the Active Zone and the more funds you can raise (subject to our limits). For example, if you’ve earned 10,000 karma, you can set a fundraising goal of $10,000. So it makes sense to back as many campaigns as you can afford. What’s more, every time you earn karma, those ahead of you in line receive bonus karma too. So even if you back just one campaign and never do anything else, you’ll still get your turn in the active zone eventually.

Is Whirl a pyramid scheme?

Until now, circles of support were limited to friends and family. But with Whirl, there’s no limit to the number of backers. Whirl is completely different from pyramid marketing schemes. In a pyramid scheme, those at the top stay where they are, getting richer on the contributions of those further down, until the scheme can’t grow any more and it collapses. Whirl has a pyramid shape, but members are moving upwards all the time, and everyone gets a turn at the top. Once they’ve reached their goal, they leave the system (and start again at the bottom, if they want to). So the system renews itself as it grows, eventually generating funds for everyone, not just a few users at the top.

Rotation

Whirl promotes an active, ever-growing community of users offering each other rotating mutual support. The great strength of Whirl’s is that it doesn’t rely on a constant flow of new users. Instead, users who have already reached their goal go back to fund other users’ projects, moving up the site’s structure in terms of priority. This means the structure never gets clogged up with low-activity users. We believe Whirl will change the rules of crowdfunding and allow thousands of people to realize their dreams.

Fundraising levels

To start with, fundraising goals are limited to our Micro level, which includes campaigns raising between $200 and $30,000. That means that even if you earn more than 30,000 karma points, you can only set a fundraising goal of $30,000. Once we gain enough active users, we’ll unlock two more levels: Medium (up to $300,000) and Maximum (up to $3m). The three separate streams will ensure larger campaigns don’t slow down smaller ones.
